Let Your Heart Grow

Originally I had planned to write about Robin Williams this evening, but I really don't know what I can say that hasn't already been read on fb.

He was truly a great talent, bringing not just laughter but also thought provoking, radical, dramatic performances as well.

I had always seen a sadness in him though, even in his Mork days. Maybe it was just one kindred soul recognizing another.

My son said it best when he referred to depression as "a wicked thing". I referred to my own battle in an earlier blog. That war isn't over. It never will be. Just like an addict has to fight their good fight everyday, so goes the life of the recovering depressed.

But that's where the choice comes in. Rather than allowing it to swallow me up, I've chosen to let my inner warrior come out.

I could show you some of my writings from my darkest days. You wouldn't recognize me. There were days when I felt that if I were to fall from the face of the Earth no one would even notice. That no one's life would have skipped a beat. I thought that if there was a light at the end of the tunnel then as sure as shit it was going to be a train. So how did I get from there to here?

I got help.

Not one of us is alone in this world. There are billions of people walking this Earth and you'd be amazed at how many of them are willing to help.

I found an excellent counselor, who in turn lead me to a wonderful doctor.

There is no weakness in admitting you need help. In fact, it is liberating. The weight of the world does not need to be on your shoulders. That's the key right there.

The Dalai Lama said something to the effect of "if you can't help then at least do no harm."

Well, he's a wise, loving man and all, but I'm telling you, you CAN help. I think that's why we're all here together - to help each other.

We start out with these big ole hearts, but then as we get older we start to get wrapped up in ourselves and our issues.

It doesn't have to be that way.

Our hearts can and should grow with us.

We don't have to be the strong one every single day. We can give and take. Some days you'll lift someone with just a smile. Other days it'll be paid back to you.

Never, ever be afraid to turn to someone for help.

And on your good days, shine your light. Spread your love and feel it come right on back to you.

Let your heart grow.

Peace, love and light, Beth
